Chess at Three - 3 years - Pre-K

Chess at Three tells stories that transform chess pieces into a memorable cast of quirky characters that help children understand and play chess. Every lesson is based on a story that introduces children to the fundamentals of chess from piece mechanics, to basic strategy, all the way through the endgame and checkmate.

Early learners will focus on piece mechanics and basic strategy. Through stories and exercises, we learn how all of the pieces move and their relationship to one another, as well as the idea of capturing an opposing piece. We also begin learning about thinking before we move and having a “chess-ready” mind and body,( i.e. how to concentrate, take turns, and behave during a game of chess.) Once piece mechanics are mastered, we change our focus to making not just legal moves, but also strategically sound moves. We transition into playing a full game, and since we introduce winning and losing in this section, we also learn about sportsmanship and how to win and lose with grace.
